BIOGRAPHY
Roman Gerber impresses with his “striking clarity” and “virtuoso brilliance” (SZ) in his performances of major and minor works of the clarinet literature.
The timeless elegance of his interpretations is based on his historical-aesthetic understanding of the works, paired with the sonorous and yet flexible sound of his clarinet down to the finest nuances.
In his concerts, Roman Gerber passionately explores the boundaries between epochs and genres: in addition to the great classical and romantic repertoire of his instrument, he combines musical gems by unknown composers with works that blur the boundaries between classical music and jazz.
Roman Gerber plays the great solo works by W. A. Mozart on the basset clarinet intended by the composer. Like no other instrument, the basset clarinet, even in its modern reproduction, resurrects the soundscapes of Viennese classical music. With its enormous range and compelling timbre, this extraordinary member of the clarinet family not only delighted audiences of the time, but also inspires today's composers to create new works. As one of the few clarinettists who play this almost forgotten instrument, Roman Gerber is particularly committed to the contemporary repertoire of the basset clarinet.
Roman Gerber also curates interdisciplinary concert formats that seek and present an active exchange between visual art, poetry and music. He regularly collaborates with contemporary authors and institutions such as the Hamburger Kunsthalle.
His close chamber music partners include Friederike Sieber, Nils Basters and Oliver Bunnenberg on the piano. But Roman Gerber also demonstrates his close musical partnership and lively artistic curiosity in the Trio Belles Affaires with oboist Freya Linea Obijon and cellist Benedikt Loos.
In addition to these collaborations, he is a welcome soloist with the Kammerphilharmonie Mannheim, among others, and can also be heard as a chamber musician in free productions of the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra or the Hamburg Chamber Orchestra.
Roman Gerber studied in the renowned clarinet class of Prof. Reiner Wehle and Prof. Sabine Meyer at the Lübeck University of Music. He continued his studies in the concert exam with Prof. Rupert Wachter at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg.
Roman Gerber has been awarded the Cultural Prize of the City of Gersthofen, first prize in the Elise Meyer Competition and the Berenberg Culture Prize for his skills and commitment. In the past, he has been sponsored by the Franz Wirth Memorial Foundation.
